Weird Text Generator

This weird text generator starts at a gentle 20 out of 100. Letters get a few stray marks above, through and below, so the line looks off without turning into a smear.

Runs entirely in your browser. Your data never leaves your device.

    How to use it

    1. Type or paste a short phrase. One to five words is the sweet spot.
    2. Leave Intensity near 20 for readable weirdness, or drag it up toward 45 for something stranger.
    3. Untick Above, Through or Below to change the shape of the effect. Press Shuffle for a different arrangement.
    4. Read the result out loud to a friend, or at arm's length on your phone. If you cannot read it, lower the slider.
    5. Press Copy text and paste it where you want it.

    Weird, but still words

Most glitch text tools only have one volume: loud. This page is tuned the other way. It opens at intensity 20, with marks above, through and below, and the goal is text that makes people look twice and still lets them read it.

The sample "weird text generator" has 20 characters. At the default shuffle it comes out at 106 characters, 86 of them combining marks. That is about 4.8 marks for each of the 18 letters, which is enough to look wrong and not enough to bury the word. Compare that with the cursed text generator, where the same line grows to 317 characters.

    How the effect is built

A combining mark is a Unicode character that attaches to the letter before it instead of taking its own space. The Unicode block "Combining Diacritical Marks" holds 112 of them, from U+0300 to U+036F. They were designed for accents, such as the dot over an i or the tilde over an n. Stack several on one letter and you get the glitch look.

This tool draws from 51 marks that sit above a letter, 39 that sit below, and 5 that cut through the middle. At intensity 20 each letter gets between 1 and 3 marks in each chosen direction, plus at most 1 through the letter. A letter therefore ends up with about 7 extra characters at the very most. At maximum intensity the cap is 14 per direction. Nothing here is an image. It is all text, so it pastes like text.

What each setting does to readability

These counts come from the sample line at the default shuffle, all three directions on:

    IntensityResult lengthMarks addedHow it reads
1035 characters15Barely there. Looks like a rendering glitch.
    1567 characters47Clearly odd, fully readable.
20 (this page)106 characters86Weird. Reads fine in one line.
30121 characters101Dense. Still readable in a short phrase.
45181 characters161Stacks start to touch the next line.
60235 characters215Classic Zalgo territory. Hard to read.

The jump between 10 and 15 is larger than it looks, because at 10 the generator adds at most 1 mark per direction and no through marks. If 10 feels too tame and 15 too busy, try 12 to 14, or drop Through and keep Above and Below.

    A quick readability test

Looking at text on a big monitor makes it seem easier to read than it will be on a phone. Before you commit, do two checks.

    1. Hold your phone at arm's length and read the line out loud.
    2. Send it to yourself in the app where you plan to use it. Some apps shrink or reflow the marks.

If either check makes you slow down, lower the slider by 5 and try again. Weirdness that costs the reader effort stops being fun.

    Where weird text works

    Bios, handles and display names

A short weird name stands out in a list of plain ones. Keep it to a word or two and watch the counter under the result. A name field with a limit of 32 characters counts every mark, so a seven letter name at intensity 20 already uses about 40. If the field refuses the paste, lower the intensity or untick one direction.

    Captions and chat messages

Use it on the word that carries the joke, not on the whole message. One strange word in a normal sentence lands harder than a paragraph of marks, and it stays easy to read on a small screen.

    Fiction, tabletop games and puzzles

Game masters use it for a message that is slightly wrong, like a note found in a quiet room. For something that should feel like a monster, use the scary text generator. For something that should look like a damaged file, try corrupted text.

    Limits you should know about

    • Search. A search for "weird" will not match "weird" with marks on its letters. If you want to be found, keep a plain version nearby.
    • Other readers. People who use screen readers or braille displays may get a different result from sighted readers, and how marks are announced varies between tools. Do not put anything important only in weird text.
    • Rendering. Fonts decide how marks stack. The same text can look cleaner or messier from one device to the next.
    • Length rules. Marks count as characters in most limits. Check the counter.

Unicode also recommends that software treat runs of more than 30 combining marks as a problem. At intensity 20 you stay far below that, which is one reason this setting tends to paste cleanly where heavier text gets cut.

    Undoing it

Paste weird text into the Zalgo text remover and the marks are stripped. For the full set of styles at once, open the glitch text generator.

    Frequently asked questions

    What is weird text?

Weird text is ordinary text with a few Unicode combining marks added to each letter. The marks are small accents and strokes, so the words look slightly broken while the letters stay recognizable. It is the quiet end of the glitch and Zalgo family.

How do I make weird text that is still readable?

Keep Intensity at 30 or below. At 20, each letter gets up to 3 marks above, 3 below and at most 1 through the middle. Short words survive this easily. Long sentences get tiring to read, so use it on a name or a single line.

Is weird text the same as Zalgo text?

It uses the same method, only much gentler. Classic Zalgo text sits around intensity 55, where the stacks overlap the lines above and below. Weird text stays near 20, where they mostly do not.

Can I use weird text in a username?

Often yes, but check the length counter. A 20 letter phrase at the default setting turns into about 106 characters, and many name fields count every combining mark. Shorten the phrase or lower the intensity if the field refuses it.

Will people be able to search for my weird text?

Usually not. A search for the plain word does not match letters that carry extra marks, because the marks are separate characters in the string. Put the plain version somewhere nearby if people need to find you.

Why does it look different on another device?

The marks are drawn by the font and the app, not by this page. Different fonts stack and space the marks differently, so the same text can look tighter or looser elsewhere. Test it on the device where most readers will see it.

How do I remove the weirdness again?

Paste the text into the Zalgo text remover. It strips the extra marks and returns the plain letters.
