Scary Text Generator

This scary text generator opens at 65 out of 100 with marks above and through each letter. The text grows tall and scratched, like something clawing up the line.

    How to use it

    1. Type or paste one short, plain sentence. Quiet sentences look scarier than loud ones.
    2. The tool opens with Above and Through on and Below off. Tick Below as well if you want the text to come apart in both directions.
    3. Set Intensity. About 50 gives a tall, tense look, and 80 and up starts to swallow the line.
    4. Press Shuffle until the damage sits on the words you care about.
    5. Press Copy text and paste it into your story, bio or message.

    Text that climbs the line

Horror text works best when the reader feels something is slightly off and getting worse. This page builds that with marks that grow upward and cut across the letters. The sample, "Something is wrong", has 18 characters. At the default setting it comes out at 140 characters, 122 of them combining marks. That is about 7.6 marks for each of its 16 letters.

Leaving the bottom clean is a deliberate choice. The text keeps a flat baseline and loses its top, which looks like scratching or static rising off the line. If you want the opposite, with the text melting downward, use the creepy text generator.

    What the marks are

The tool uses Unicode combining marks. These are characters meant to sit on top of the previous letter, such as the accent in "é". Stack several on one letter and the result looks like damage. The tool picks from 51 marks that sit above a letter and 5 that cut through it: tildes, short and long strokes, and slashes laid over the letter. Because all of it is text, it copies and pastes like any other text and never turns into an image.

Here is how the sample line grows as you raise the slider, with Above and Through on and Below off:

    IntensityResult lengthMarks addedLook
    2061 characters43Static on the line
    3580 characters62Scratched, readable
    50113 characters95Tall and tense
    65 (this page)140 characters122Reaching up
80160 characters142Starts to swallow the line
    100199 characters183Unreadable spikes

At 65 a letter gets between 3 and 9 marks above and at most 2 through the middle. That is a ceiling of 11 extra characters on any one letter, well under the 30 that Unicode's Stream-Safe Text Format treats as a sensible limit for a run of marks. At 100 the ceiling is 17 per letter, which is still under 30 with Below turned off.

Write the line before you style it

The generator does not make weak copy scary. Plain words do most of the work, and the marks add weight. A few lines that tend to hold up:

    • A statement that sounds calm and is not: "Something is wrong".
    • A short command: "Do not answer it".
    • A fact that should not be true: "The house is longer inside".

Avoid long sentences. Every letter carries several marks, so a sentence of ten words becomes a block that is tiring to read. Keep each styled line to six words or fewer and let the surrounding text stay plain.

    Where scary text fits

    Halloween bios and captions

Put the scary line first and a normal sentence after it. That way people who see broken or flattened marks still get the message. Posts that rely only on heavy text can look empty in apps that drop the marks.

    Horror stories, creepypasta and campaigns

Use one styled line per scene, not per paragraph. A single corrupted line in a quiet text hits harder than a page full of it. Game masters use the same trick for a voice that should sound wrong.

    Usernames and server names

Names have length limits counted in characters, and marks count. A seven letter name at 65 can reach about 55 characters. Check the counter under the result before you paste.

    Common problems

    • The marks collide with the line above. Lower the intensity, or put the styled line on its own line with space around it.
    • It is cut off after pasting. The app limits marks or characters. Drop to 50 and try again.
    • Nobody can find it. Search does not match letters that carry marks. Keep a plain version beside it if people need to look you up.
    • It looks different on another phone. Fonts draw marks their own way. Test where most readers will see it.

For the most extreme version, see the cursed text generator. For a broken-file look, try corrupted text. To turn any of it back into plain letters, use the Zalgo text remover.

    Frequently asked questions

    What is scary text?

Scary text is normal text with many Unicode combining marks stacked on each letter. The marks look like scratches and tall spikes, so the words seem to be tearing or reaching. It is the same family as Zalgo text, with a horror tone.

How is this different from the creepy text generator?

The creepy text generator hangs its marks below the letters, so the text drips. This one puts them above and through, so the text grows upward and looks scratched. Tick Below here if you want both.

How do I make scary text for Halloween?

Pick a short line, keep Intensity between 50 and 70 and copy the result into your caption or bio. Add one plain sentence beside it, so the post still makes sense where the marks do not render.

Why does my scary text look different after pasting?

Apps and fonts draw combining marks in their own way, and some apps limit how many they keep. If the text looks shorter or flatter than here, lower the intensity and try again.

Can I use scary text in a game chat or on Discord?

Often yes, but each community sets its own rules and filters, and they change. Test a short word first. Heavy text can also be read as spam, so use it once, not in every message.

How many marks does a letter get?

At the default 65, each letter gets 3 to 9 marks above and up to 2 through the middle, so at most 11 per letter. At 100 the ceiling is 14 above and up to 3 through.

Can I get the plain text back?

Yes. Paste it into the Zalgo text remover and the marks are removed, leaving your letters.
